The Municipal library of Genazzano was opened in 1969. In1981, it was relocated to the Colonna Castle and almost immediately renovated by the Fine Arts Service. It was reopened to the public a few years later.
It is currently located on the first floor of the Colonna Castle – in the west wing. It covers a surface of 500 square metres, including a “Multimedia” hall used to host conferences, exhibitions, workshops and training courses.
It is a member of Sistema Bibliotecario dei Monti Prenestini along with the Libraries of Cave, Gallicano nel Lazio, Palestrina, San Cesareo and Zagarolo. It has a wealth of ancient documents dating from 1600-1800, with approximately 2000 volumes, most of which are historical and encyclopaedic, and some Cinquecentine (books published in the 16th century), which have been completely restored by the Sovrintendenza ai Beni Librari of the Region Lazio.
The Library owns SBN indexed historical archives with documents dating back to 1600 through to 1945. Its modern stock consists of 9,225 XX-century books, a large children’s section, including a “Theatre” section, and, from this year on, it is also specialising in “Modern and Contemporary Art”, as the Castle is home to the CIAC (Centro Internazionale di Arte Contemporanea, International Centre for Contemporary Art).
The library offers lots of free services, such as: book reference, consultation and loan service, multimedia and Internet point, new-books area, guided tours.
